Fresh Blasts Hit Ukrainian Capital

Multiple explosions hit Ukraine’s capital Monday, with the head of the Ukrainian president’s office saying Russian forces had attacked using Iranian-made drones. Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klichko said blasts took place in the central Shevchenko district, the same area where Russian missiles struck last week as part of widespread airstrikes across the country. Klichko said Monday’s attack damaged several apartment blocks and sparked a fire in a non-residential building. Andrii Yermak, the head of Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy’s office, attributed the attacks to so-called kamizake drones, a tactic Russia has used recently to crash drones into a target. Last week’s attacks …

In an Instagram posting that has now been deleted, Rebecka Fallenkvist called Anne “immoral” among other things, according to Swedish media. Teens Tackle 21st-Century Challenges at Robotics Contest

For their first trip to a celebrated robotics contest for high school students from scores of countries, a team of Ukrainian teens had a problem.  With shipments of goods to Ukraine uncertain, and Ukrainian customs officers careful about incoming merchandise, the group only received a base kit of gadgetry on the day they were set to leave for the event in Geneva.  That set off a mad scramble to assemble their robot for the latest edition of the “First Global” contest, a three-day affair that opened Friday, in-person for the first time since the pandemic. Nearly all the 180-odd teams …

The mayor’s building in Donetsk, part of the Ukrainian region Russia recently claimed as its own, was seriously damaged, with rows of blown-out windows and a partially collapsed ceiling. Nearby cars were burned out. There were no immediate reports of casualties. The Kyiv government did not claim responsibility for the attack or comment on it. Ukraine said …

Turkey Calls Greek Claims on Migrant Mistreatment Fake News

Turkish officials Sunday shot back at Greek allegations that Turkey forced 92 naked migrants into Greece, calling it “fake news” and accusing Greece of the mistreatment. Greek migration minister Notis Mitarachi was “sharing false information” after the official tweeted a photo of the naked migrants Saturday and blamed Turkey, said Fahrettin Altun, the communications director of Turkey’s president. Altun tweeted in Turkish, Greek and English that this was to “cast suspicion on our country,” while calling on Athens to abandon its “harsh treatment of refugees.” “Greece has shown once again to the entire world that it does not respect the …

New UK Treasury Chief Insists Truss Retains Control

The new U.K. Treasury chief on Sunday insisted Prime Minister Liz Truss retains control of her government despite having to roll back her signature economic policies weeks into her premiership. Jeremy Hunt was drafted in to lead the Treasury after Truss sacked Kwasi Kwarteng amid rising pressure following the turbulent market reaction to the new administration’s “mini-budget.” “The prime minister’s in charge,” Hunt, a former foreign and health secretary, told the BBC when he was asked whether he now held all the power at Downing Street. Truss and Kwarteng had slowly unraveled key elements of their economic vision, including tax …

Protesters March in Paris as French Refinery Strikes Continue

Three weeks into a refinery strike that has caused fuel shortages across the country, tens of thousands of protesters marched in Paris on Sunday, adding to a growing picture of defiance and anger about inflation. The demonstration against the rising cost of living on Sunday was called by the left-wing political opposition and led by the head of the France Unbowed (LFI) party, Jean-Luc Melenchon. Some protesters wore yellow florescent vests, the symbol of often violent anti-government protests in 2018 which shook the pro-business centrist government of President Emmanuel Macron. Opponents of Macron are hoping to build on the momentum …
